We have started work on site on this amazing new house. In order to take advantage of the stunning views, we have built the house into the hill to give the maximum amount of glazing possible on a South facing elevation. The butterfly plan is intended to give each of the main rooms triple aspects creating a strong relationship between the garden and the panoramic views.
Due to difficult site conditions, we used a continuous piling system as a permanent retaining wall; the house itself uses a concrete frame.
Butterfly plans were once popular with the Arts & Crafts movement; on the right site, such as this one, with views in all directions, they remain a wonderful design motif. For example, this article in Country Life talks about the butterfly plan.
