The owners of this wonderful Shillinglee home were looking for contemporary refurbishment and an extension in keeping with the existing property.
This Grade 2 listed cottage presented many design challenges not least the need to retain the original oak structure. The roof was home to a bat roost so we needed to work closely with ecologists to ensure the bats were protected, while maintaining the optimum build programme. By replacing a more modern lean-to roof, we were able to carve out a new hallway and stair. As the stair was a new addition, we opted for a contemporary design to contrast with the existing building; the original oak and the exposed steel work well together. The original oak beams and bricks were cleaned and restored and a later porch was replaced with a modern, frameless glass structure which provides a small seating area to enjoy the garden.
